Gianni Mattu.

Giovanni Battista Mattu was born in the province of Nuoro, in Sardinia, and from an early age he showed a strong predisposition for drawing and painting, creating images inspired by the works of the Renaissance, the Impressionists, the Macchiaioli and the Sardinian artists of the early twentieth century.

In the following years he cultivated his passion for art, attending some courses in painting technique, while strengthening his strong bond with the wild and uncontaminated nature and the traditions of his land. Today he lives and has his studio in Alghero.

His artistic career began in the nineties, when he created some murals together with other artists in Fonni, in the province of Nuoro; then the first group exhibitions, and in 2001 his first solo show in Alghero, when he decides to sign his works with an art name, Gianni Mattu. Many exhibitions have followed over the years both in Italy and abroad, including in 2015 "Artistes du monde" in Cannes, in 2016 the Triennale di Roma in collaboration with the Trittico Gallery and in 2018 the International Art Fair Padua. Among the numerous awards, he won the third Arcaista Tarquinia international prize.

Gianni Mattu is an artist in constant research, for whom it is essential that painting can blend with the expressiveness of the most diverse materials.

Initially he devoted himself mainly to oil on canvas with a palette knife, with a material technique and an expressionist language that synthesizes figures and landscapes, but also portraits. Particular of this period are the series dedicated to children's games, memories of a time when toys were invented and manual skills and imagination were important, as was socialization; some children are depicted with the traditional costumes that are still used, to represent the importance of Sardinian traditions and identity that are still handed down today.

Over time, the artist begins to experiment with "difficult" surfaces, in search of an expression that is however harmonious, capable of communicating emotions and stories to the viewer through the use of unexpected mediums. Thus appear in his works sand, cardboard, but also cuttings of used jute bags, which offer the sensation of experience and time and which, glued on board or canvas, blend with the almost sculptural materiality of acrylic and oil colors .

In other paintings fragments of prickly pears are intertwined which, dried and peeled, present a texture that looks like an ancient embroidery, or carasau resinated bread, a symbol of his land, once worked only by women, who together created moments of socialization . Furthermore, the passion for the mosaic technique allows the artist to combine, in an unexpected and happy way, tiles of marble and painting, mixed with fragments of other natural elements, such as cork.

Gianni Mattu is also looking for new pictorial supports, such as cement or oxidized sheets, where rust becomes part of the work and creates backgrounds that blend in a fascinating way with colored pigments; finally, he also experiments with land art installations, such as the 2700 square meters on the beach of Alghero on the occasion of the Giro d ’Italia in 2017.

Gianni Mattu surprises with his great ability to always get involved through original materials and techniques; at the same time he manages to narrate his land with great poetry, in the ancient and at the same time modern faces of women, in the happiness of childhood images, in the power of nature. His works fill the eyes with colors and the hands with unexpected and fascinating surfaces, in a breath of timeless serenity.
